Chaplin - The Dreamer

by Marianne Molloy
(Long Beach, CA )

I took this picture of Chaplin when he was about 9 weeks old. We had him at a Petco (where we take our cats for showing and adoption) and he was wistfully looking out the cage and the sun was in the right spot to illuminate his eyes. I simply opened the cage door and he first looked at my camera but then just slightly turned his gaze away and that’s when I took the picture. If I had to do over again, I wish I had centered the picture better but to be honest, I had no idea what a gorgeous picture it was going to turn out to be so I didn’t think about composition at the time.

Composition
by: Janice

I think the composition is just fine. It is good to have your subject off-center. There is a rule in photography called "the rule of thirds." You draw an imaginary tic-tac-toe board on your photograph. You are supposed to have the most important part of the photo (like the cat's eye) in one of the intersections of those imaginary lines. If you want to crop this photo later, keep this rule in mind. Best regards -- Janice.
