Cute Baby Picture Ideas

The bad news is: Most people are not satisfied with just an average picture, especially when it is their baby! So, let us explain (and show you) ideas for taking cute baby pictures that have come from both professional experience as well as parents and visitors like yourself.

Size up Your Subject

Just like photographing small pets, you need to alter your shooting style with babies.

Why? Because your baby is probably much smaller than you are (if not, you have a definite contest winner).

Too many people shoot what they hope will be a cute baby picture from many feet above the baby.

All this does is accentuate the size disparity or provide a detached perspective, neither of which are desirable.

Instead, try shooting at eye-level (even if they happen to be closed). If the infant is laying on the floor or a bed, position yourself next to them. If they are in a crib, car seat, or some body's arms; bend down to their position before taking the pictures.

Forget the Home Run and Go for the Singles

If you spend an hour of picture-taking time with a baby, don't make the common mistake of waiting 40 minutes for that one spectacular picture.

Instead, take pictures of your baby engaged in simple, common, everyday "baby things." If you are lucky, you will occasionally capture that rare spectacular photograph, but don't limit yourself to them.

There are countless everyday activities like eating, looking at an object, or even sleeping that can easily produce very moving photographs.

How to Light up the Room

If your goal is capturing riveting or cute baby pictures, think no flash!

Of course, there are exceptions, but as a general rule, do whatever you can to capture that incredibly cute baby picture in natural light, regardless whether you are outside or indoors.

During the day, pull back the drapes, open the windows, crank up the ISO, and/or move the baby to where the light is best.

If there's still not enough light, consider a longer exposure while using a tripod. Another photo trick is to place your camera on a solid surface, zoom in and focus, and then use the self timer.

Using natural light will produce a softer, more realistic look in all colors, especially skin tones, eyes and clothing. Note that these methods should only be used when the baby is completely still; otherwise the resulting image will likely be blurred.

If taking pictures indoors at night, you don't have many good options other than using a flash, unless the baby is completely motionless.

Avoid Being Too Bright

Up Close and Personal

Either physically or through a telephoto lens, move in close to seize the baby's charming features and expressions.

Babies are also ideal subjects to experiment with very tight cropping of the pictures.

The Little Bits

There is something captivating and magical about baby pictures that contain just a hand, seen in the perfect light.
