Which Family Reunion Activity To Do?
(a.k.a.) Solving the "Boredom Blues"

"Find the right family reunion activity
and everything else will be smooth sailing."

Family reunion activity (or, activities) to the rescue! You've planned, spent, traveled, and arrived.

After taking an hour to reacquaint yourself with everyone, you better have some activities planned or you'll have a family-wide rebellion on your hands.

Implement a few of the following ideas to avoid that all-too-familiar chant... "I'm bored!"

The Family Reunion Activity To The Rescue!

1) Posed Photographs

collage  In the 12 to 18 months before your family reunion, take 30 minutes and think about constructing a Photography Pose List. Then customize the list for your family.

It also might be a good idea to make some notes on how to get the most out of poses in general.

After all, wouldn't you prefer to take some really good pictures and then create a phenomenal collage?

2) Candids

There's an old saying in photography: "The posed shots go in your album; the candids remain in your heart." At all your family reunion activity(s), keep your camera close and ready.

The more you keep your eyes open for priceless candids, the better will be the results. Just remind yourself everyday, while involved in the family reunion activity of the moment... there's priceless shots out there - all you have to do is find them!! Here is an idea for baby pictures.

3) Food

What would a family reunion activity be without food? Unless you're staying in a resort where your meals are provided, food will be an important function for the group. Here are a few ideas on food, to get your creative juices started:

  • Have every family unit bring a few dishes to share. This may be more practical on shorter family reunions, or if camping, but even on week-long reunions, it's a welcome treat.

  • If everyone does bring dishes, suggest different categories to each group. Otherwise, you could end up with 15 types of salads and be overrun with rabbits.

  • Menu trading is very popular, so have everyone bring and/or email their recipes to the coordinator. After the reunion is over, the coordinator can send out the newly published "Family Cookbook" comprised of all the volunteered recipes (a "post" family reunion activity).

  • Don't make this a working vacation for the cooks. Plan some family feasts to take place in restaurants too. This is where the Yahoo search really comes in handy.

Any type of food imaginable can be located close to your location (assuming you are not in the middle of a forest). Unusual family-style or all-you-can-eat restaurants are great fun for large groups.

  • You may also want to consider restaurant/activity theme locations that combine a meal with an entertaining event. What's better than a family activity that involves food?

4) Discovering Things To Do

Many major search engines like Yahoo have links to one family reunion activity after another.

Just enter the city or zip code, press "enter" and like your own personal entertainment guide, you are presented with endless options for everything from local amusement parks to museums.

And, if that's not enough choices, do a search on the city followed by "activities" in Google, and you'll pull up more matches than you'll have time to go through.

Additional resources to locate more family reunion activities are the local tourist bureau and visitor's center.

5) Inexpensive Summer Activities

  • Rent some movies

  • Arrange a huge picnic in a park. Don't forget to bring the toys and games, sports equipment, and kites

  • Local zoos are popular and provide wonderful opportunities for taking funny photos

  • Amusement parks

  • Water parks

  • Go cart tracks

  • Shopping centers

  • Hiking

  • Organized tours of the city & surrounding areas

  • Beach, lake, or ocean activities

6) Games

Even though you are all family, using games to reacquaint everyone is a very popular family reunion activity. There are countless books that contain terrific ice breaker games designed to learn more about people in a group (for example, just enter "icebreaker games AND book" below -- without the quotes).

Google
It's also good if you can have everyone bring baby pictures of themselves, and then play "Name That Baby."

These ideas should get you started when choosing your next family reunion activity. Just remember that by planning for activities beforehand, your family will avoid a great deal of wasted time trying to figure out what to do once everyone is together.

Since the most valuable time is when your entire family is all in one spot, be sure to work through all the family reunion activity tasks before everyone gets together.
