Your Pooch's Picture Could Be Here...Just like this Little Lady, ![]() I think the comment submitted by "Anonymous" sums it up best: "This is why dogs bite" Get ready for pet photography tips that explain how to create adorable dog portraits (or cat pictures) alone, with the family, using toys or props, indoors, and outdoors. Photographically speaking, dog pictures are a completely different animal (sorry, couldn't resist). At least with other poses, your subjects will listen to you because they understand you (infants and toddlers excepted). For photography involving humans and NOT PETS, the key points for taking a portrait are:
![]() Interested in having your dog have their own web page? Dog Pet Photography(Cat Lovers - click here)On the other hand, the key points for taking pictures of pets is:
This is just one of your typical family pet portraits where the owner is comfortably relaxing on the grass with her dog. Pet photography tips include safety too, so don't just run over and take the shot. If you're familiar with the dog, fine; otherwise, let Fido warm up to you. Wait (there's that PATIENCE word, again) for the dog to strike a memorable pose, and then snap the picture. If nothing is happening, move to a different position. The dog will react, and then it's back to waiting. If you haven't guessed by now, pet portraits involve a lot of patience and luck. Often, you need both!
Pet photography tips for close-ups and cropping are not that much different than those for people. For a close-up shot like this, if you're not sure how the animal will react, use your telephoto setting from a safe 6 foot distance. Often the best "pet portraits" are done from 50 feet away. If there's no concerns, you can move in closer, trying other settings. And if you have a high enough resolution camera, you can still obtain a quality print after cropping. Notice the light and shadow on the dog's face. In typical family portraits, shadows and light on subjects' faces should generally be avoided (unless attempting a special effect). However, notice the result here -- much more unique than if the pet portraits were done in all shadow or all light. As far as pet tips on pictures go, this one's a big one, although it doesn't sound like that big a deal... Don't be afraid to experiment, especially when you don't have that much experience. Remember, what's the worst thing that could happen with a bunch of disappointing pictures taken with a digital camera? Right... that redeeming "Delete" button. Compare the levels of cropping between this pet portrait and the one above. Consider what the shot would look like if ONLY the eyes were showing. The point is to EXPERIMENT... use your creative vision; try some things that you have absolutely no idea how they will turn out. What's the very worst that will happen? Deleted images! Big deal.
When are pet portraits not about the pet? When you look at this pose, where are your eyes drawn... to the boy or the dog? This picture is a good example of taking something that's not working and turning it into a good photograph. I had been working on different pet portraits all afternoon with this lovable pooch. I took plenty of pictures, but none of them "was a home run" (in my opinion). So, I gave up attempting to do any posing and simply observed the dog interacting with others. This shot was the result. Sometimes the best pet portraits are actually candids that you had the patience to wait for.
Brandy here is a miniature pinscher. You can't tell from this picture (which was the point, by the way), but Brandy weighs only 10 pounds and is about the size of a regulation football. Having made friends with her, she had no problem being coaxed over to a luscious green section of lawn, where I placed a toy football down to create the perfect setting for shooting off some pet portraits. With dogs who are very comfortable with you (like your own), often the best "portraits" result from the dog being all tired out rather than really frisky. Place a toy down near a dog with boundless energy and they'll begin to toss it all over (which, if you are working with a fast enough shutter speed such as 1/1000, you can get some great pet portraits if you work at it). The lazy man's approach is to first tire Fido out, then you can just about dress them in a Wonder Woman outfit, and they'll be too tired to shake it off. THAT would be a priceless pet portrait! Same dog, same toy, same grass. But as you can see, the pet poses (this and the one above) are totally different.
You stay and keep shooting terrific pet portraits; then take some more pet portraits, and finally wrap up with... you guessed it, just a few more pet portraits. And, please don't run out of charged batteries or memory!!! Another benefit of this pose is it's perfect to play around with depth of field results. Put your digital camera's control setting on "aperture priority" and focus on the football with one picture using an F-stop of 5.6 and the next one using an F-stop of 22. Then compare the two. Then take two more pet portraits using the same F-stops, but this time, focus on Brandy's face.
A photographic favorite (for dog pictures, especially) is the photo collage. There are so many potential themes, or possible groupings that could be created, that we could spend the next week just listing the first 100. Therefore, let's look at this collage, which displays a "combo-platter" of several different styles. If you like the photo collage approach, here are a few themes to get you started:

Not rated yet ![]() Just for you cat lovers, let me present Luci. Remember everything I've been telling you about taking pet portraits? Well, you can forget most of it. At least for any animal other than dogs.Since each species has their own unique characteristics & personality, here is a page just on cats. Luci here is very outgoing and not afraid of the flash. Her brother on the other hand, broke the land speed record following my first attempted pet portrait using a flash, and was not seen again for the rest of the night. (She was spotted the next day wearing dark sunglasses.) Luci allowed me to move in quite close, and her jet black color did a nice job of absorbing the flash's hot spots. ![]() Leave Pet Portraits and return to the Home Page |
