Want to Share Photos?
It's Easy & Fun

"There are so many ways to share photos
that sometimes we don't even know where to begin."

Back in the "old days" (for those of you over 35, you know what I mean), the methods to share photos were limited and cumbersome.

But in today's digital age, it seems like new methods are created every week!

There's email, personal web sites, ISP-hosted personal web pages, software programs for making CD and DVD audio-included presentations, phew; I'm getting carried away. Let's take them one at a time, and in no particular order.

Ways to Share Photos

  • Email: Send one or more image files to a single recipient, or set up your entire family as a distribution group. The thing to be aware of is the total size of your attachments (image files, in this case).

When it exceeds 2 MB, the message may not go through, because many servers have a per message or total mailbox capacity limitation. My recommendation is to use email to share photos whose total is less than 1 MB, and use the methods described below for larger volumes.

  • Online Albums: There are many locations on the internet where you can create, store, send, and share photos and albums. And, you decide what an album will include... from today's 5 pictures of your new baby, to your entire family vacation of 400 photos.

  • CD Creation:Use any of the numerous software packages available to create your own customized photo album, that can be mailed to that special friend or relative.

Programs that come pre-loaded on new PCs do a basic - good job of creating online albums.

The problem is that the recipient of your CD has to have the same software and version of the software that created the program.

If you plan to use this approach, you might be better off in the long run finding a software package that does not require the recipient to have the software installed on their computer.

  • DVD Creation: Similar to the above "CD Creation," DVD creator software should be considered when you want to share photos and produce a larger, more spectacular multi-media presentation that would exceed the CD's capacity.

  • Your ISP: Check out your own internet service provider (ISP) for the services they offer. You may be pleasantly surprised to find out your monthly service charge includes the use of several online viewing options to share photos.

  • Blogs: "Weblogs" or as they are known... "Blogs" (is there nothing on the internet that is not abbreviated?) provide a relatively new approach to share photos. Websites can have a blog to allow a continually running diary-type listing of comments, links, and... ta da... photos.

  • Personal Websites: There are numerous sources on the internet to help you create your own quickie little website. (For those of you wanting to develop a commercial site, but don't know anything about programming or development - I suggest SBI, which is what I used for this site!)

Just search any of the major search engines and you'll find more listings than you want. However, before all that work, you might want to first check out your own ISP, as mentioned above.

  • Create Your Own eBook: Have you ever wanted to be an author? Well, it's pretty simple today to create your own "electronic" book ("eBook"). You can create an eBook such as "What I saw on my summer vacation" (including photos and text), which you could then send to everyone. And, if it's really, really good, you can always follow up the eBook with an invoice for $10. Who knows what might happen?
