Shrunken Aircraft

by gary morgan
(wales uk)

With fast moving objects, I'm wondering if I took this photo too soon because I wanted larger images of the planes.

wow!

wow! this is great! could be made into a postcard...fast moving subjects are hard to catch on cam.congratulations!i was just thinking that even if you were only able to get a shot of shrunken jets it might have helped if there was less of the sky on the left side of the photo.you can edit it though, but, oh well, nice shot!

Cool shot but...
by: David

...in answer to your question.
A basic rule of composition to is to make the subject fill 85% of the frame with the background taking up the remaing 15%.
Due to your subject, jets in the sky, this rule obviously has to be bent a little due to the sky (which is pretty big !).
You mention you think you took the picture too soon and, even though I think you've a great shot here I agree with you
As shot the jets are flying 'toward' you and the front of a jet is pretty small. If you'd waited and taken the shot as the jets flew 'past' their profile (from underneath)would have filled a higher % of the frame.
I think there also would have been more of a smoke trail.Again, more subject less background.
One thing to remember is that when a subject is moving 'across the shot' a better panning technique or shutter speed needs to be used than if the subject is moving toward the shot.
I say again though...you've still got a great shot.

man this is great

Did you ever think of asking them to stop? In all seriousness though that is a great pic. I don't think there is anyway to get any closer than having a serious zoom lens and then you run the risk of losing some of the planes. You have got a solid picture telling a interesting story so don't beat yourself up.

The only way to make the planes any larger is to zoom in (with camera or Photoshop) and cut some of the planes out of the photo. I love just as it is. I wish I had taken it!

Need Long Telephoto
by: Bill

This is a very good photo - composition, clarity, subject, etc. I'll guess that because the planes were far away, even a telephoto lens only brings them in so much.

To get a larger image, you'd need something like a prime lens, 400mm at a minimum, tripod mounted for sharpness (downside of fast moving objects).

Don't be discouraged - not with this shot anyway!
