When are Small Digital Cameras the Perfect Choice?
Despite impressions to the contrary, small digital cameras (also referred to as compact digital cameras) are quite popular. And why shouldn't they be? They're easy to carry, usually loaded with features, and take respectable photographs.
And, how small is small?
The Pentax Optio S4 fits in an Altoid mints tin! Most of the other small digital cameras are larger than that, but most do a surprisingly good job of taking pictures. Most camera manufacturers such as Olympus, Canon, Nikon, and HP to only name a few, provide a large selection of small cameras.
The Pros
We need to remember that Small Doesn't Mean Underpowered. Let's look at some of the advantages of going tiny:
- Easier to transport long distances
- Less bulky to pack and carry with you on trips
- Less conspicuous than their larger brothers, that are often seen protected in large Nikon or Canon camera bags that might as well have a label that shouts Steal me!
- Small digital cameras often compare favorably with larger cameras in the feature and price categories
The Cons
Being that few things are black and white (don't you just hate photography puns), let's now look at a few of the disadvantages when considering small digital cameras:
- The physical size of the smaller cameras can limit some of the available features, such as image manipulation
- If you are male shooting in a rough part of town, hecklers may call you a woosie-boy or girly-man and taunt you mercilessly
- Unless you have small hands and fingers (which usually go together), you might have trouble with some of the camera's controls, so be sure to perform a thorough test before buying
- The smaller the digital camera, the less likely it will support an external flash.
There you have it. Lots of reasons to go small, and a few drawbacks. But for all you Mighty Mouse fans out there, I'm guessing small is the way you'll go.
