Surprised Myself

Portrait of Adam

Portrait of Adam

I just got my camera about a month ago and started reading right here on this site. Also I've been looking at online portfolios to get portrait ideas; reading tips HERE and there.

I really want to get some good portraits to display. I'm taking LOTS of pictures and experimenting with lighting, flash, etc. I only have one model and a small apartment so I have to be creative.

For this picture I pinned a black queen size sheet as a background high enough to be over his head and enough so that he would also be standing on it.

My wall does a zig-zag so there is actually three walls in the picture. One facing me at his fingertips, one he's facing and one about a foot behind him. I really think that made a difference.

I only had light through the windows (overcast day) which are covered with beige curtains (neither window is behind me.) I used no flash and I think I took 30 pictures to get 2 that he wasn't moving in.

He's wearing a blue vest and his shirt is white, but the picture is yellow toned. It was much later that I realized the yellow came from the window light shining through his Little Tikes slide about 2 feet behind him! This is definitely my favorite picture so far.

white balance
by: Anonymous

This is a technique issue, and could be fixed by going into most photo editing programs and added some blue, there most have a fluxent light on to create the tone, because the tone on his skin is yellow also. However the pose is very nice. If you can't fix the white balance change it to a black and white photo.

GREAT PHOTO
by: TJ

I LOVE IT.... I was nervous about using a sheet for a back drop but now I see there is nothing wrong with using one...

ooooooohhh!
by: photo girl from BC

That picture is beautiful. I am a portrait photographer (have been for just over a year) and am very "picky" about portraits. This one is perfect. Keep up the great work...you could be famous one day.

Amazing
by: Tamer

Amazing lighting, and the black background and the subject making both contrasted well.

Looks like a painting
by: Anonymous

That looks like a painting. You could get it enlarged and hang it on your wall.
